ISSUE NR. 07

Dear Friends,

September has been a unique month for us at Fotografiska.

Having celebrated our opening on the 14th, we will be sad to wave this memorable month goodbye. However, this is only the beginning.

While tradition dictates that summer is over, mother nature has other ideas. And we hope that this late surge of sunshine will encourage you to venture out and accept our latest cultural offering. As always, we have chosen what we believe to be the most diverse range of art events and shows—a lucky dip, except each dip is a prize.

Please note that some of these events will take place before the end of September, so take our advice before it’s too late.

As always, thank you for joining us on our journey and being part of our community.

– Your Fotografiska Berlin team

All Around the World - Unseen Color & Early Black and White

Over a decade before the term “New Color” was recognized within industry parlance, Magnum photographer Thomas Hoepker was already using Kodachrome and Ektachrome slide films for his work.

The Buchkunst Berlin gallery presents its newest exhibition entitled All Around the World – Unseen Color & Early Black and White, which will present numerous unpublished and early Hoepker photographs for the very first time, with scenes from Rio, Hong Kong, New York, Naples and Paris shot during his photo reports from 1959 onwards. Hoepker’s work is a unique study on global development; one where color sits in the driving seat. Many of his photographs feature color as an extended and dominant element of the image composition. Buchkunst Berlin will also present a selection of Hoepker’s black and white images, taken in Italy between 1956 and 1959 to coincide with the release of the 124-photograph book THOMAS HOPEKER – ITALIA, published by Buchkunst Berlin Verlag.

A limited special edition of the book is available, signed by Thomas Hoepker. All photographs from Thomas Hoepker's catalog can be purchased through the Buchkunst Berlin gallery.

Event date: 30 September, 6 pm – 10pm, Buchkunst Berlin, Oranienburger Straße 27, 10117 Berlin

A Dancefloor Education

Founded in 2020, Tag der Clubkultur was an effort to breathe life into Berlin’s club scene in a time of crisis. But do not be misled by its title. Tag der Clubkultur is not simply a day, but a week-long festival with a program that includes dance events, concerts, readings, discussions, exhibitions and installations. This year will cast a special spotlight on local artists.

On this occasion and in an effort to contribute to these conversations, research and consultancy agency VibeLab and Fotografiska will host a two-part panel discussion entitled A Dancefloor Education . Panel 1 promises a deep dive into the unwavering spirit and resilience of club culture against all odds, and its ability to drive a sense of community, collaboration and creative development. Panel 2 will explore the importance of experimental programming and how music, art, fashion and film can aid in uplifting displaced communities.

Event date: 3 October, 4pm – 7pm, Fotografiska, Oranienburger Str. 54, 10117 Berlin

Unwetter (Storms)

Painter and video artist Katharina Ziemke insists that we face the consequences of our actions via her installation Storms (translation: Unwetter), a contemplation on ecological responsibility that can be found In the Lichthof Ost (east courtyard) of Berlin’s Humboldt University.

Storms explores the idiosyncrasies and multifaceted nature of storms, representing the natural phenomenon both as its literal self and as a metaphor for the increasing ecological challenges of modern times, allowing its audience to, quite literally, exist momentarily in the eye of the storm. Ziemke has also crafted a new climate-centric video series entitled Episode: Storm, a filmic collection of thoughts from scientists, students, a politician and a manager. As part of Berlin Science Week 2023 (1-10 November), the installation will also act as a venue for events such as live performances, guided tours, and workshops.

Event date: 28 September, 6pm (Opening) / 12 & 26 October, 7pm (After Work Guided Tours), Humboldt University of Berlin, Unter den Linden 6, 10117 Berlin

The brand new zine promises to include studies on fake news and futurism, fast food and food faux pas, food fights furious foodies and what FFMDP is calling the best film ever made. If that doesn’t tantalize your tastebuds, well, we don’t know what will.
